Gentatsu Matsuoka (1668-1746) authored a two-volume picture book entitled Ōhin (Cherry Products) which included the 61 pictures of cherries shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Gentatsu drew the shapes of his picture subjects accurately but colored them only in shades of gray because full color printing was not possible in Japan at the time. When his pictures were reprinted in 1891 more colors were added. The pictures shown here are from the 1891 version. Many of the Japanese cherry names given by Gentatsu are no longer used so their scientific names are not known.
